Influence of the Portuguese Bend landslide on the character of the effluent-affected sediment deposit, Palos Verdes margin, southern California

چکیده
Historic accretion of sediment on the Palos Verdes margin off Los Angeles County, CA, is dominated by two sources, effluent from Whites Point outfall and sediment eroded from the toe of Portuguese Bend landslide. In this paper, we document the recent history of sedimentation from these non-marine sources from 1937 until the late 1990s, and attempt to estimate the amount of material preserved on the shelf. Toward that end, we characterized offshore sediment by physical and geotechnical testing, using non-destructive gamma-ray whole-core logging techniques and conventional geotechnical strength tests, and X-ray diffraction. Results are reported within a geographic information system framework that allows for: (1) the evaluation of the spatial variability of the measured properties, and (2) assessment of the influence of these properties on processes affecting the effluent-affected sediment layer. In the inner shelf, material eroded by wave action from the toe of the Portuguese Bend landslide since 1956 has contributed 5.7–9.4 million metric tons (Mmt) of sediment, from a total eroded mass of 12.1Mmt. A lesser fraction (X2.7Mmt) of sediment is incorporated into the midand outer-shelf effluent-affected sediment layer. Evidence from X-ray diffractograms clearly indicates that landslide material has mixed with the midand outer-shelf effluent. From 1937–1987, it is estimated that 3.8Mmt of solid anthropogenic effluent was discharged into the water column and onto the Palos Verdes Shelf. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

An examination of seasonal deformation at the Portuguese Bend landslide, southern California, using radar interferometry
[1] The Portuguese Bend landslide, located on the Palos Verdes peninsula in southern California, is a slow‐moving landslide whose activity is closely tied to infiltration from rainfall. We use radar interferometry to constrain the seasonal kinematics of the landslide from 1995 to 2000. Traditional interferometric synthetic aperture radar methods estimate an average downslope displacement rate o...

White croaker (Genyonemus lineatus family: Sciaenidae) are a schooling, benthic foraging fish historically associated with soft sediment and wastewater outfalls in southern California. While they are often used as an indicator species due to their high organochlorine contaminant loads, little is known of their movements in relation to contaminated habitats. A Vemco Positioning System acoustic t...

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Investigating the relationship between landslides in sediment production in watersheds is one of the most important issues in the management of watersheds. The purpose of this research is to introduce a suitable model for the effect of landslide on sediment load in Gol Gol watershed in Ilam province, with the assumption that the linear relationship betw...

A large-scale survey on the area and depth stratified distribution of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT; mainly p,p'- and o,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE)) contamination in the water column of the Southern California Bight (SCB) was conducted in 2003-2004 using a solid-phase microextraction-based sampling technique. Dissolved-phase DDEs were clearly widespread, with the central SC...
متن کاملInfluence of intake’s angel and location on sediment rate in bend of river using CCHE2D software
Investigating the features and flow behavior and related component is one of the complex phenomena that make using of software inevitable. The rivers carry sediment content along with water which is created by erosion of riverbed sediment and erosion caused by rainfall or surface runoff flowing over the catchment area. If the action of river dewatering occurs, the entry of sediment into the int...
